Pulse Appam - Packed with nutrition

My mother used to make Unni Appam which is a sweet dish made during Vishu (festival celebrated on 14th April in Kerala)... They are sweet Appam's which are sweet and made with Rice powder, Jaggery, Banana & Coconuts...  Even the Prasad distributed at our temple is Unni Apppam and I love the taste.

Yesterday, I made Pulse Appam which is a salty & spicy version of Appams where in I added Pulses and grains and a bowl of Spinach  and few Coriander leaves which added colour and of course  packed with nutrients!

I prepared Pulse Appe, which is surely a treat to the taste buds at the same time its wholesome, healthy and very nutritious!

I made the batter and made few Appams for kids in the night yesterday.  They are the ones who are my best judges at home as if they demand for more then I know it is a super hit dish :).  I made the batter yesterday and kept it in the refrigerator and also made it this morning for breakfast.

The recipe as described below :

Ingredients :

Chana Dal - 2 Cups
White Vatana - 1 cup (dried white peas)
Rice - 1/2 cup
Green Chillies - 5
Ginger - 1 big piece
Cumin / Jeera Seeds - 1 tsp
Fennel Seeds (Badi Sauf) - 1 tbsp
Pepper Powder - 1 tbsp (you can reduce to 1/2 tbsp if not required to make it spicy)
Finely cut Spinach - 1/2 cup
Corriander leaves - 1/4th cup
Fresh Coconut cut into small pieces
Salt to taste

Method :

Soak Chana Dal, White Vatana, Rice separately for 3 to 4 hours (you can soak it overnight for using it next day morning).  Wash dal, vatana and rice and mix all other ingredients upto Pepper Powder and grind coarsely in a mixer.  Transfer this to a bowl and add salt, and the green leaves and cut coconuts and mix well to medium thick paste.

Heat the Appe Patram and grease it with very little oil.  Low the flame and pour the mixture into the appe patram.  Cover with a lid and cook then flip it to the other side. Cook till both sides are light golden brown.  You can serve the Pulse Appam  with any chutney.  I served it with Eggless Mayonnaise...
